Aloha and welcome to The Arc in Hawaii. The Arc in Hawaii is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization founded in 1954 by a group of parents of children with intellectual disabilities. As the state chapter of The Arc of the United States, The Arc in Hawaii is part of the largest national organization devoted solely to working on behalf of people with intellectual disabilities.

An estimated 7.2 million Americans have intellectual or a related developmental disability. Through aggressive advocacy at the local and national level, The Arc ensures that these individuals have access to the services and supports they need to grow, develop and participate in communities across the country.

The Arc in Hawaii is an outstanding non-profit organization providing quality services to the adult disability community. They have a lovely on site Adult Day Health Program that allows clients to chose from different activities and interests. They also provide regular ongoing small group excursions with clients for community integration and access for all individuals.

The service our family is the most familiar with from the Arc in Hawaii is their housing. We have a 34 year old son who’s been a resident in one of the Arc’s Domiciliary group homes since 2011. The Arc supported our family every step of the way, bumps and all, allowing him to grow into the independent, confident young man he is today.

The housing provided by the Arc in Hawaii has given our son the freedom and independence he wants with the safety and supervision he needs. The supervision and support provided has been outstanding over the years and we have never had any concerns about his well being or safety. We consider our son’s care home manager, staff and housemates as part of our extended Ohana.

The administration of the Arc in Hawaii has always been easy for us to work with, friendly and professional. We have always found them to responsive to any questions or concerns and to be fully involved whenever we need them. Their representatives have all been caring and compassionate which we really value.

We completely trust the Arc in Hawaii to provide quality housing, care, supervision and support to our loved family member with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

Our family has nothing but praise for The Arc. At The Arc, uncle is thriving. That could only happen with the dedication and support of all of the Arc staff and other Arc clients. They are our family, taking care of our uncle and supporting us, and always going above and beyond. Maybe the highest compliment is that our uncle may like being with his Arc family and friends more than us sometimes! And, that’s not a bad a thing.

I like living in The Arc’s home because I get to decorate my own room how I like it. I get to make new friends. The staff help me and they make good healthy food. They take me out to the movies and take me to see my mom. I can talk to staff if I have any problems. The Arc is a true best friend.

I love living here. I am learning how to live on my own…cleaning, laundry, making my own food. But not yet. I don’t want to move out yet. I love making new friends…we go to the movies and eat out. I pay with my own money! People who know me and love me.

My son Greg, who has Down Syndrome, had a horrible meltdown when Covid hit. He didn’t understand what has happening at his other day program, which closed at that time. The Arc opened slowly & they were so gracious to take Greg 2 days a week, in their day program, starting April 2021. Then July 2021 they were able to take him full time. It was such a God’s send. He came back to his old sweet self.

Since the age of 19 my sister had been in and out of care homes, other organizations, and even with some family. None of them really provided a safe place or even took care of her personal and medical needs.
The Arc in Hawaii has been a life line for our family. They have helped us through the process and handled everything to get my sister in one of their Domiciliary Homes for Adults with Developmental Disabilities. The Arc in Hawaii staff always keep us informed of what’s going on or if anything happens with my sister. Thank you Arc in Hawaii for providing my sister with the best quality care for almost 20 years.

Our daughter lives in an Arc in Hawaii Group Home and attends the Arc Center program during the day. She is happy and has made good friends. She feels a sense of place an feels a sense of belonging to a “village”. Her roommates and her work together to clean their house and clean up after meals. She has learned to wash her own clothes and even clean her own room. They have fun together dancing, shopping, doing community activities, and enjoy their weekly dinner outings.

The Arc in Hawaii has been an incredible resource and support for our daughter Alice. For adults with disabilities, community and independence are highly important and often hard to find. The Arc provides both. Alice has lived in an Arc Home with her housemates for 8 years, supported by attentive and caring Arc staff. Alice is so proud of “her” home and of the feeling of being an adult. She helps to decide on group outings, orders her own food when the house goes out for dinner, and helps to cook and clean on a daily basis. The Arc has given Alice the chance to see herself as her own person.
